On August 4 we boarded the Amtrak in Los Angeles and joined Jim’s birth-year celebration. He made it clear that it is not his birthDAY celebration. The train was headed for San Diego, and we got off in Old Town and had lunch at Guadalajara restaurant. There were 20 of us. His sister, Alicia, came in from Fort Myers, Florida, and as far as I know, got the prize for traveling the farthest to join the party.
I had not been on a train for about 20 years, and it was fun. I was surprised at how quickly a vehicle travels when it is not subject to traffic jams. We also saw parts of Los Angeles that I thought were surreal–sort of “road warrior” or “bladerunner” apocalyptic views of a surreal industrial wasteland. But I digress.
It was a lot of fun, and it was insightful for me to share with Richard and Jim my thoughts about embarking on the sixth decade of my life. I was much more agitated about the big 50 than I am now, but this decade does set a person thinking. We were able to spend a lot of quality time with Richard and Trisha. Richard introduced us to a delightful restaurant named “Wilson.” We met the chef/owner, Michael Wilson.

Happy Birth-year, my friend!
