I was on MySpace for a year and gave it up. Then I joined Goodreads. Goodreads is a web site for bookworms, and it is much more interesting than MySpace, or Facebook. Let me tell you a little bit about what I have found so far by browsing my fellow members’ postings.
It’s early, but perhaps the “cake” goes to the book Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers. Whitney, a reader, commented, “I read this book while TAing a palpatory anatomy class for massage school, so the timing was perfect.” I assume TA means “Teacher assisting,” but you can be the judge of that.
Palpatory anatomy? I didn’t know about that, or I would have taken the course sooner. I’m a touch-feely sort of guy, after all. Unfortunately I went to a state school where we studied the history of western civilization and boring stuff like that. Masseuses take such interesting courses! My masseuse, Shawn, has been keeping secrets from me.
A lady named Candise wrote about Tipping the Velvet: “I normally hate lesbian fiction, but…” Then she added, “I think this book will touch even those non-lesbian types out there.” I’m a non-lesbian type, not being a woman, and I want to know what I’m missing. Tipping the Velvet, when I checked today, had 159 reader reviews on Amazon. Something’s going on with that book, and I’m missing out.
A lady named Karie, whose photo looks like she is ready to audition for Beetlejuice II, wrote about her favorite title: “A book worth sticking your head in the oven for.” About another book she wrote, “Deliciously tabloid-y and sad.” I’ve never stuck my head in an oven. I’ve never enjoyed tabloids. What am I missing? Karie, are you free next Friday night? I have tickets to the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
And Katie said of her current book, “Whatever else I can or can’t say for it, I was reading the end today and it made me miss my train station… I wasn’t even listening to an ipod, and suddenly I was halfway to the next stop, so I guess I was pretty engrossed. ” Katie may be a rare person: she sometimes devotes her full attention to the book in hand.
This bookworm web site brings out peoples’ personalities, and mine. Check it out. Tell me what you find.
