As the great newspapers begin their slow decline into mediocrity, I am becoming more sensitive to flabby news stories and the proliferation of clichés as a substitute for fresh, meaningful, relevant language. My least favorite are skyrocket, slash, spiral, plummet, and unrest.

I enjoy Joel Stein’s column in the Los Angeles Times. Today’s column, titled Make it a gay-old time, is an appeal to old people to vote against the proposed amendment to California’s Constitution that would ban gay marriage in the state. Voters will have the opportunity to express their preferences in November.
