I recently volunteered to be the staff photographer for Rescue a Golden of Arizona. The organization takes in golden retrievers who, for whatever reason, are homeless. They provide veterinary care, if needed, and temporary foster care for the dogs, and they seek out permanent homes.
There are rescue organizations for many breeds of dogs. I have [...]

Gregg Max

This is my friend Gregg Max.
In the way of introduction let me say that one of the final g’s in his name is silent. I opt for the second one, but it doesn’t matter to Gregg, so pronounce it as you choose.
I met Gregg when we both worked at Boeing in the 1990s. We [...]

Is literacy worth the price?

I live in Arizona, and I notice that the people of this state, more than most Americans, resent using tax money to support education. Former Arizona governor Janet Napolitano is an advocate for investment in education and she provided a line of defense against the legislators, but she is now Secretary of Homeland Security, and the locals are [...]

I have teased her about the Herman Munster look of her blog, but the writing is brilliant in the best sense of the word. Her newest article about the vanity of planning the [...]

The Washington Post today updates us on its deepening agony. I just can’t let go of this news industry collapse. I’ll understand if you refuse to read this post.
The Washington Post is offering employees another round of early retirement packages, or “buyouts,” the fourth such action since 2003 and second within a year, in its [...]

Next window, please

I don’t know about you, but my impression of the post office is that their official motto is “Next window, please.” Imagine what it will be like with 150,000 of the most experienced postal employees not there to put those signs up. The pressure might remind the remaining folks what “going postal” used to mean.
