Scholars who study this blog will recall my post that posed the question as to whether you stir your peanut butter or buy it in a state of suspended animation achieved by the addition of hydrogenated oil.
Being a devout stirrer, I was pleased to discover that the Laura Scudder brand offers an array of six different models of a device for getting the job done. These are hand-cranked, no whiz-bang electrification to complicate the matter. A range of models accomodates jars of various sizes.
My stirrer has languished in the pantry for months, and it took a leisurely, long weekend to prompt me to put it to the test.
The procedure involves putting the temporary lid in place, inserting the crank, and stirring away. Bravo! It works!
My impressions are summarized below on a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being best:
- Ability to combine oil with butter: 5
- Improvement in stirring convenience, relative to a spoon: 4
- Improvement in cleanup, relative to a spoon: 3
- Value as a conversation piece: 4
If you want one you can order on the company’s web site.

Awesome…although I’m able to achieve the same results by storing the jar upside down until ready to use, then stirring with a knife. Less shopping involved, which always appeals to me.
