There is a cute book titled, If You Give a Moose a Muffin. It is one of the classics, and it is based on a fundamental fact of life—joy takes you places you would not have thought of otherwise.
If you give a young girl chocolate sauce, she will have fun with it. The similarities between [...]

Bruce’s new yoga book is just around the corner! He told me today that it will debut at a book signing at Yoga Oasis on December 5th at 3:30 in the afternoon.
I have studied under Bruce for several years now, and I am as eager to see his second book as I was his first.
For [...]

There is a Seattle Times reporter who blogs from Afghanistan. His name is Hal Bernton. There are many extraordinary people blogging from the “stans”, and I am going to post about that soon. But today, I want to point to a story Mr. Bernton told.
In one post he introduced Anton, the dog. In a subsequent post, [...]

January 1959—I lived with my grandparents on several occasions when Dad was having one kind of crisis or another. The crises were a drag, but living with Grandma had its advantages.
The picture shows Dad in Grandma’s living room. The dark mass in the lower right is the sole source of heat in her house. The [...]
You still want to be normal?

I catch myself several times a day wanting to be normal. I obsess on it. I don’t even know what normal is, but I want it. I crave it. Is that normal?
There are thousands of reminders all around us of the joys that come to the person who abandons the search for normal. Rumi is [...]
I interview myself—again
Posted in Books, Blogs & Films on October 28, 2009 | 4 Comments »
Note: The first time I interviewed myself two complimentary notes flooded my inbox. I recently decided it was time for a second interview.
In the following, TJI denotes my “interviewer” and DRW denotes moi.
TJI: This Just In! is now in its third year. How do you decide what to write about?
DRW: I have 10 subject areas [...]

I photographed Patrick and Quentin at their Loyola High School graduation last June in Los Angeles. Patrick is our nephew on my wife’s side of the family, and Quentin is his best friend. This is Kameron, Quentin’s sister, in one of the many hundreds of photos I took over two days.
Her dress matched the petals [...]

I photographed this old fellow at a photo shoot for the Rescue A Golden 2010 calendar. He wasn’t ambulatory, so he rode in on this Radio Flyer little-red-wagon.
The purpose of the photo shoot was to produce a calendar to sell to people to raise money to care for dogs whose owners abandoned them.
It’s a winding [...]
Michelle Yauger becomes co-editor of TJI!

It is with great joy that I announce that Michelle has just accepted the prestigious job of co-editor of This Just In! There is no job description, and no pay. However, I can now use the editorial “we” without shame, and I love that.
But admit it—some of our greatest success stories have risen from just [...]
In a garden by the sea

I’m drawn to people who dream sweet dreams about living peacefully in this world. Several people in my life who fit this category are young ladies who are, as the saying goes, in the prime of life. They are idealistic, passionate, and demanding of themselves while being forgiving of others. They are as tough as [...]
