I received my new iMac this morning. It’s a gorgeous machine, but it presents a daunting learning curve. I’m lost in the labyrinth. I’m taking Wednesday off to spend with the new gadget.
Once I figure it out I will post about my visit with Tina Myers at the Casa de los Gatos. It was an [...]

The great advisor to princes, Niccolo Machiavelli, said that every prince must have someone who is empowered to say anything the prince might need to hear. This advisor could tell it like it is, even if it shocked or offended the prince. Without such an advisor, the prince ran the risk of being totally surrounded [...]
Getting sentimental about cold weather

I got feeling sentimental about cold weather today, so I plunged into E. B. White’s essay titled, appropriately enough, Cold Weather.
Mr. White is famous for noticing little things that matter. He wrote, “It is rather soothing when existence is reduced to the level of a woodbox that needs filling, a chink that needs plugging, a [...]

I photographed this old fellow at a photo shoot for the Rescue A Golden 2010 calendar. He wasn’t ambulatory, so he rode in on this Radio Flyer little-red-wagon.
The purpose of the photo shoot was to produce a calendar to sell to people to raise money to care for dogs whose owners abandoned them.
It’s a winding [...]

I have a rocking chair that has meaning to me that my wife does not understand. She complains that it doesn’t match our other furniture. Many times she has pleaded with me to give it away. Not in my lifetime, my dear. You can do as you wish once I’m gone.
It’s a sturdy chair, and [...]
Not my mama’s yamas

The yoga tradition involves three ‘yamas’ that are of great interest to me: yama, niyama, and pranayama. My mama never knew of them, and would not have been interested in any case.
This post is prompted primarily by my growing interest in pranayama, but all the yamas are worth a quick look.
Yamas are things we abstain [...]
The sins of the modest soybean

In the interests of complicating absolutely everything Brazil makes the lowly soybean a threat to our very survival. The reason is the Brazilian rainforests are being slaughtered to create soybean fields. The real estate owners say they can’t say no to the profits.
The rainforests are Earth’s “lungs.” Enjoy oxygen while we have it. Our grandchildren [...]

Phoenix competes with Hades itself for the title of hottest place in creation. Phoenix often wins. The Arizona Republic reports that 11,368 homes in the Phoenix area had their electrical power cut in the month of June for non payment of their bills.
In Arizona, July is hotter than June.
The local power companies delay cutting the [...]

The Wikipedia article on Nero, the Roman emperor, seems more like front page news than ancient history. Apart from the decline in murders among residents of the palace, we are doing pretty much the same things now as they did then.
As today, the Romans were into thievery of public resources, arguments over which neighbor nation to [...]
My new look

I noticed the text was sliding off the page of my blog. The reason turned out to be that they retired the template I was using. Hence, this new look.
